CNN’s Dana Bash burst into laughter Wednesday after a correspondent poked fun at President Donald Trump’s bizarre suggestion that nobody might run for president in 2028.
The moment came as Trump fielded questions outside his White House ballroom construction site, a day after Republicans suffered bruising election losses.
Asked about Vice President JD Vance’s political future, Trump appeared uncertain about who might enter the next presidential race.
“You’re gonna have a lot of people, maybe a lot of people running, maybe nobody’s gonna run,” Trump said Wednesday. “Maybe he won’t run. I don’t know who’s gonna run.”
CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes couldn’t resist pointing out the obvious.
“I can assure you one thing, Dana, someone is going to run in 2028, no matter what President Trump says,” Holmes said, drawing laughter from Bash.
Bash then offered her own sarcastic take.
“Listen, I mean, the Democrats are thrilled about last night, but if the president is right that no Republican will run for president, that just makes it even sweeter icing on the cake,” she said.
Holmes went on to highlight another contradiction in Trump’s remarks, noting that he agreed with Vance’s assessment that the Iran war hurt Republicans but continued to blame the resulting rise in gas prices rather than the conflict itself.
Trump also insisted he would have handled the war no differently despite the massive midterm election losses.
