Black Lives Matter activist commits suicide outside Ohio statehouse: 'My demons won today'

An activist with the Black Lives Matter movement was found dead in front of the Ohio Statehouse after apparently committing suicide, Cleveland.com reports.

MarShawn McCarrel, 23, shot himself on Monday night. While no one witnessed the shooting, he was seen on statehouse grounds on Monday night just before it happened. In a heartbreaking final Facebook post, McCarrel wrote, "My demons won today. I'm sorry." His last tweet betrayed a morbid twist of humor. He wrote, "Let the record show that I pissed on the state house before I left."

McCarrel was a committed social activist and helped organize protests in Ohio after a white Ferguson police officer shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. He also founded a youth mentorship program called Pursuing Our Dreams and another organization called Feed the Streets which helps Ohio's homeless population, according to Cleveland.com.

His Twitter feed, in retrospect, seems to indicate he was struggling just before his death.

"I still have nightmares in paradise," he wrote on Saturday.

Last December, he spoke about racism in an interview with Columbus Live.

"People have become so conditioned to hatred and racial bias that as a society we need to 'unlearn' what we have been conditioned to think," he said. "We have to break those walls down before we can build a stronger society."
