#BlackBrunch protests disrupt 'white spaces,' provoke gun threat from ex-NYPD cop

Activists barged into restaurants and bistros Sunday morning in New York City and Oakland to “target white spaces” in their ongoing protests against police brutality.

The demonstrators, who peacefully entered the eateries and read the names of black people killed by police, organized their protests and shared photos using the Twitter hashtag #BlackBrunch.

“Every 28 hours, a black person in America is killed by the police,” the protesters said. “These are our brothers and sisters. Today and every day, we honor their lives.”

About 40 protesters protested at popular Manhattan brunch spots -- including Lallisse, Maialino and Pershing Square – where some diners stood in solidarity with them, although others engaged in verbal clashes with the demonstrators.

No arrests or violence was reported.

The demonstrations, which originated late last month in Oakland and included protests Sunday in Berkeley, sparked an angry backlash on Twitter.

John Cardillo, a former New York City police officer and contributor to Glenn Beck’s website The Blaze, made what appeared to be a threat against protesters on his Twitter account.
