Boys could face felony charges after video shows them taunting classmate as ‘dirty n****r’
Two teens accused of taunting a black classmate with racial slurs could face felony charges as juveniles.
Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper recommended charging one boy with ethnic intimidation and a harassment charge against the other boy, reported WDIV-TV.
The victim, Phoenix Williams, recorded video of the incident on his cell phone after he said the teens had been targeting him for abuse, including racist jokes in a computer lab.
The eighth-grader said the boys called him a “dirty n****r” during a school bus ride while on a field trip, and he said they threatened to break his phone if he reported the abuse.
Administrators at Bloomfield Hills School District said the teens were punished but did not specify the terms.
Williams said he is afraid to return to school with the teens, who he hoped would be expelled.
His family issued a statement Wednesday applauding the prosecutor for her decision to charge the boys.
“While we are grateful that this is a move in the right direction in obtaining justice for Phoenix Williams, we are dedicated to continue the fight to ensure that all students are protected,” said Lee and Shanari Williams in a statement.
