'Unhinged': MAGA darling reportedly faces 'real trouble' in high-profile lawsuit
Right-wing podcaster Candace Owens may have bitten off more than she can chew in the legal fight with the first lady of France, according to a report in The Bulwark.
Since leaving Ben Shapiro's "The Daily Wire," Owens has pushed the outrageous theory that Brigitte Macron is a transgender woman who has committed a litany of crimes and has links to a centuries-old cult that's working to undermine Western civilization.
Owens "went so far as to beg the Macrons to sue her" if her claims weren't true, even "offering to pay their legal bills to do it," wrote senior reporter Will Sommer.
The Macrons called Owens's bluff, hiring prominent libel firm Clare Locke and filing a 219 page complaint in Delaware Court, prompting Sommer to declare, "Candace Owens is in some REAL trouble."
Far from cowering, however, Owens has doubled-down by re-airing four shows repeating her unfounded claims.
Owens's allegations are "a little hard to sum up," Sommer wrote, "in part because her story keeps shifting—as the Macrons’ lawsuit notes, Owens dropped some of her 'evidence' as it has been disproven—to describe them as unhinged doesn’t go anywhere near far enough."
Sommer noted plenty of evidence proving Owens's claims are false, "including photographs and Brigitte Macron’s birth announcement in a local newspaper."
The Macrons' lawsuit could lead to Owens paying hefty legal damages — that could prove financially devastating, according to Sommer. Possibly even more harmful is the revelation that MAGA is now split between Owens and many of her conspiratorial compatriots.
Also detrimental to MAGA are the potential headaches for Donald Trump, "who has had to tend to some awkwardly complicated diplomatic relations" in the past, and may now have to tread lightly around the Macrons.
