A Republican from Georgia received a brutal fact-check during a heated debate about the midterm election results on CNN.
On Tuesday, voters elected Democrats in a bevy of key races, giving the party control of Congress for the next two years. Republicans swiftly blamed high gas prices resulting from President Donald Trump's war in Iran, inflation, and the high cost of living for their losses.
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) attempted to defend the GOP's policy positions ahead of the midterms during a segment on CNN "Election Day in America." However, his comments were met with fierce pushback from Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD).
For instance, Carter defended Trump's decision to bomb Iran by saying they didn't listen to Trump when he tried to negotiate with them in the first place. He also claimed that Trump was right to bomb the country, even though it led to many of the economic issues that cost Republicans the midterms.
"Just wait until the Democrats get back in power," Carter said. "[Gas prices] are going to go up even more!"
Alsobrooks was having none of it.
"We didn't create thismess," she said. "So everyone should beclear that the Democrats didn'tbring us into war. The Republicans did. This presidenttook us into war without anexplanation, without a clearplan to get out of the war. Andif we are saying now thatsomehow our performance will beassessed against our ability toclean up the mess that Republicans made, it may taketime for us to do that. I thinkthe first acknowledgment is thatthis is an utter failure, and I think everyone, everyone hereagrees with that."
Carter claimed that the real "utter failure" would be to let Iran have a nuclear weapon. Alsobrooks reminded him that Trump said he had "obliterated" their nuclear stockpile in 2025.
"Was the president mistaken when hesaid that he had obliterated Iran's nuclear stockpile lastyear, that they had no abilitywhatsoever to have a nuclearweapon?" Alsobrooks asked pointedly.
"I don't think he ever said that," Carter said.
"Roll it back!" Alsobrooks shot back.
