Downbeat Trump wanders away from reporters during ballroom construction site interview

A visibly downbeat Donald Trump spoke to reporters from the construction site of his White House ballroom on Wednesday afternoon and then, without warning, wandered off.

During the press availability, which was joined in progress by MS NOW, the president dismissed worries about working with Democrats who will take control of both chambers of Congress in January after Tuesday's GOP midterm wipeout.

Asked if he was “concerned” that Democrats may attempt to impeach him again, the president parried, “Not even a little bit. I think it would destroy — I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that, because impeachment for no reason. What? For having a successful country? Our country is more successful now than at any time in its history.”

He then remarked, “Watch the beam go up,” before turning heel and meandering off to his left without answering any more questions.

Back in the MS NOW studio, anchors Peter Alexander and Alicia Menendez appeared puzzled before Menendez offered, “There you had it. The president of the United States, taking questions in front of one of his vanity projects.”

“What's the thing that my kids text their friend that do the, you know, the face-plant, the hand on your face emoji?” Alexander stated. “That's what I think Americans are doing as they witness the president making remarks like this. I'm reminded of President George W. Bush in the middle of the war, where he made his comments on the 18th tee of the golf course. And he said, ‘Yeah, we're going to kill all these terrorists and yada, yada. Now watch this drive.’ Here's the president sitting there with a war in Iran that's unpopular, Americans resoundingly rebuking him last night, and as he walks off, he says, ‘Watch this beam go up.’”
