The former leader of the Republican Party in the California state Assembly was arrested late Wednesday night in Sacramento County, the Modesto Beereports.
Stanislaus County Supervisor Kristin Olsen was stopped by the California Highway Patrol for driving without headlights. She was charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and having a blood alcohol level greater than .08 percent, and was released from custody on Thursday.
Robert Forkner, Olsen's attorney, admitted that she had been drinking wine at dinner, but said the stop was because she was unfamiliar with the car she was driving.
“We are confident that she will be found innocent,” Forkner said.
In 2017, a white nationalist organization published documents they said proved an extramarital affair between Olson and California Assembly Republican Leader Chad Mayes (R-Yucca Valley). Mayes is the son of a pastor and graduate of Liberty University.
In a statement, Olsen said she was "embarrassed and horrified" after her "careless mistake."
"It was a hard lesson to learn," Olsen said.
Olsen served in the state Assembly from 2010 to 2016 and has been serving as a Stanislaus County supervisor since 2017. She was divorced from her husband Rod Olsen in October.
