'Why can't Republicans do their job?': CNN analyst spars with Trump apologist over GOP rushing Kavanaugh's confirmation

In a fiery CNN panel Wednesday night, former campaigners for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went head-to-head over the GOP's rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh amid a decades-old sexual assault allegation by his high school classmate, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

"This really shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans," Clinton's presidential campaign manager Robby Mook said. "It should be about the truth."

"I don't understand," Mook continued. "If I were a Republican senator or any senator entrusted with choosing someone for a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the lands, I don't understand why I wouldn't want the FBI to spend, what, 72 hours just trying to lay out the facts in this case before speaking to her. I don't understand why somebody wouldn't want that."

Host Jim Sciutto noted that in the case of Anita Hill, the woman who accused Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment when he was nominated to the bench 27 years ago, that the FBI only spent 72 hours investigating her claims before determining they were "unfounded."

Amy Kremer, the co-founder and co-chair of the Women for Trump PAC, pointed out that a sexual assault allegation is not the FBI's "jurisdiction."

"It should go to the local authorities there in Maryland," Kremer said as Mook shook his head.

"That's not true," he said, causing the Trump supporter to shoot back that her claim is true.

"I think [Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman] Chuck Grassley said that an FBI investigation is not going to help recall her memory or change her memory," Kremer continued. "What they want to hear from her is her memory and what she has to say."

Mook pointed out that when Hill accused then-nominee Thomas of sexual harassment, President George H. W. Bush ordered the FBI to investigate the allegation. The Women for Trump chair interrupted him to claim the bureau has investigated Ford's allegation against Kavanaugh, but the Clinton campaign manager continued.

"I just don't understand why these Republicans can't do their job," Mook continued. "Their job is to vet these people and these guys just want to jam this guy through."
