Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson went on a full attack against President Donald Trump on Tuesday as the former warned that it appears federal agents are already staging an effort to invade Chicago the way that has been done with Washington, D.C.
Both Pritzker and Johnson accused Trump of pulling federal resources that aided the city and state's anti-crime programs that were helping communities, effectively defunding the police.
After the speech, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace looked over the top of her glasses and called it the perfect example of offense.
"The mayor of Chicago is taking a two-by-four to the — I want to use Bill Barr's favorite word, but I won't," Wallace said, referencing Barr's frequent usage of the profanity "bulls---." "But the lie that anything Donald Trump is doing is about crime. Mayor Brandon Johnson, saying, 'Chicago will have a violence problem as long as red states have a gun problem.' The mayor then ticked through the systematic cuts on Donald Trump's part in funding for every single federal program that funds cops on the streets of cities, that funds law enforcement efforts to remove illegal guns."
Johnson quoted statistics that Chicago police officers have removed 24,000 illegal guns from the streets of Chicago that are being funneled into the city through "a pipeline of illegal arms ... from red states."
"He name-dropped the states of Indiana, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This came after a sharp rebuke of Donald Trump's theatrics and the name-checking of another gentleman that Gov. Pritzker seemed intent on making a household name. A gentleman who spends time on TikTok named Gregory Bovino, who he essentially accuses of theatrical displays of force in American cities, describes him as packing up his operation in LA, deploying to Chicago, and warning other cities in blue states that this is the show likely to come to their city and state."
Wallace called on reporter Vaughn Hillyard to ask if the White House has a response to allegations that Trump has drained from federal police programs that offer results without violating the Posse Comitatus Act, which a judge ruled Trump did in California. Wallace was so shocked by the answer that she asked it three times; each time, Hillyard confirmed that the White House had no response.
