Chilean detainee at JFK airport was hospitalized Thursday after suicide attempt

A woman being held by immigration officials at New York City's John F. Kennedy airport attempted suicide on Thursday rather than risk returning to her native Chile.

The New York Daily News reported than an unnamed Chilean national took approximately 30 sleeping pills and an unknown number of muscle relaxants after being informed she could not enter the U.S. and would be deported back to Chile.

The woman was being held by Customs and Border Security at JFK's terminal 8 to be placed on a return flight when she reportedly lost consciousness and slumped to the floor. Bystanders noted that she was having difficulty breathing.

Port Authority officers John Devins and Dominick Renda were called to the scene. They administered the overdose-reversing drug Narcan to revive the unconscious woman.

She was taken to Jamacia Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

While she was not one of the travelers stranded or detained all over the world on Saturday by the "chaotic" implementation of Pres. Donald Trump's broad new anti-immigration and anti-Muslim executive orders, her story demonstrates that many immigrants face desperate circumstances and tremendous challenges in their native countries.
