'Stunning': Dem senator accuses Trump of 'coordinated legal assault on political dissent'

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) on Thursday outlined what he described as a "coordinated, relentless legal assault on political dissent" by President Donald Trump and his allies.

Writing on BlueSky, Murphy made the case that the Trump administration is trying to make electoral victory for an opposition party all but impossible in future elections.

First, Murphy believes that Trump's decision to pardon the rioters who stormed the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 was essentially a green light for political violence intended to intimidate dissenters.

Murphy then dives into the legal maneuvers the administration is using to cripple Democrats' electoral machinery.

"Now Trump is destroying the infrastructure of the opposition," Murphy writes. "He is signaling that he is going to shut down ActBlue, which is the primary website that channels grassroots political donations to Democrats. Of course, WinRed, the Republican equivalent, will be untouched."

Murphy then describes a "stunning" Trump announcement that "no government contracts would go to companies that employ legal firms that represent Democratic causes," which he described as "a brazen and illegal attempt to cut off legal support for his opposition and lawsuits against him."

"And this is just a sample," Murphy warns. "The campaign is relentless and planned. Democracies don't die in a single moment. You just wake up one day, and the regime has so badly crippled the opposition that they can't compete in elections. This is where we are heading if we don't wake up."
