When a columnist from the conservative Federalist website claimed that right-wingers had been hounded by liberals for celebrating Father's Day amid the Trump administration's controversial family separation policy, one CNN commentator immediately batted the idea down.
Discussing her Monday column titled "Ivanka's deafening silence," writer Anushay Hossain noted that the First Daughter made herself a figurehead for feminism on the campaign trail and in his White House. Although Federalist writer and Hot Air editor-at-large Mary Katherine Ham agreed with her, the women diverged when it came to the backlash leveled against Ivanka other Trump supporters for celebrating Mother's and Father's Day while refusing to condemn the family separation policy.
"Everyone vaguely right-of-center on the Internet this weekend has been told they can't celebrate Father's Day," Ham said, claiming the reactions were "emotionalism" that went "too far." Hossain agreed that the repercussions had been swift — but not necessarily undeserved.
"Totally," the CNN and New York Times writer said, "but it also demonstrates a tone-deafness."
"There is a national crisis happening," Hossain said before noting that Ivanka is a part of her father's administration and therefore doesn't have the luxury of remaining neutral.
"Is your father's government anti-children?" she implored. "That's what we need to know."
