CNN suspended political commentator Roland Martin Wednesday afternoon for controversial comments made on Twitter that drew the ire of the LGBT community and others.
After a few days if silence on the matter, the cable news network released a statement to The Washington Post about their decision.
"Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive," the statement said. "Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”
Martin reacted strongly to a H&M Super Bowl commercial featuring soccer star David Beckham wearing underwear, tweeting, “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!”
The Twitter page of the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLADD) immediately responded to Martin's tweet and called for CNN to fire him.
It is unclear as to how long Martin will be suspended from the network.
