Colorado school cafeteria manager says she can prove she was fired for feeding needy students

A kitchen manager who was fired from her job at an Aurora, CO elementary school says that the Cherry Creek School District is lying when it says she was fired for poor performance.

Della Curry told CBS Denver that she was fired from Dakota Valley Elementary School for giving free food to students who could not afford lunch and that she now has a copy of her personnel file, which lends credence to her claim that she was not fired for performance-related reasons.

“I stand by all of my statements," said Curry. "I let you see this because I’m not in this for publicity, I’m not in this for attention. And I’ve got nothing to hide.”

Six weeks before her termination, Curry received a glowing employee evaluation, but her termination letter says that she was fired for "giving away food at no charge."

The school board insists that there were other issues with Curry's performance that they are not at liberty to discuss, but Curry is standing by her version of events.

“I was a good employee. I loved that job, I loved that school district, I loved those kids. I could have continued to be a very good employee, and I’ve admitted that I broke the rules and I should have worked harder within the system. But the system is broken and it doesn’t work,” she said.
