If Congress subpoenas Trump's taxes -- Mnuchin says he'll 'follow the law'

Multi-millionaire Steve Mnuchin whined in a hearing Thursday that he didn't benefit from President Donald Trump's tax cut to the top wage earners.

“I can tell you I did not personally benefit,” the Treasury Secretary said to members of the House Ways and Means committee, Politico reported.

He said that he paid taxes in New York and California and his tax rate went up because he doesn't have the state and local tax deduction (SALT). The tax allows those in high-tax states to deduct their local taxes on their federal returns. So, states like New York and California often have high property taxes. Those taxes have now been capped by $10,000.

He admitted he wasn't sure if his federal tax rate declined after the bill was passed.

The secretary also said that he purchased a Tesla, which would give him a $7,500 tax deduction for the green vehicle.

"I didn't need the $7,500 tax credit," he said. Though it's unclear if that would have changed his tax situation or not.

Mnuchin has come under fire since joining Trump's cabinet because he uses private government jets to shuttle him around the world. The travel cost American taxpayers over $1 million.

When he was asked about the president's taxes, he said he wasn't sure, because he's unfamiliar with Trump's tax situation. He said that if he receives a request from Congress for Trump's taxes he will "follow the law."
