Conservative hits the panic button about Trump's reelection chances: 'Almost doesn't matter who the Dems nominate'

Conservative commentator Steve Deace on Tuesday said that President Donald Trump needs to rapidly re-calibrate his political strategy or else risk getting blown out in 2020.

In looking at the president's tumbling approval numbers during the record-long government shutdown, which didn't even succeed in getting funding for his proposed border wall, Deace said that Trump has dug himself a deep hole that he must immediately work to climb out of if he wants to have any hope of winning next year's presidential election.

"Trump’s negatives are approaching it almost doesn’t matter who the Dems nominate territory," Deace wrote on Twitter. "He needs to spend this year building his presidential resume/stature and favorables back up with the public. He needs to reinforce his own case before going into campaign attack mode."

Deace then took a preemptive swipe at conservatives who insist that Trump will be fine because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also an unpopular figure.

"It doesn’t matter what Pelosi’s negatives are," he explains. "They were horrible last November, too, when Dems won 40 seats. They’ve been horrible for years."

According to FiveThirtyEight, Trump at the moment has the highest disapproval rating for any president at this point in his first term. Although former President Ronald Reagan similarly had a high disapproval at this point in his presidency, that was largely due to the fact that the United States was in an economic recession in the early 1980s, whereas Trump has enjoyed a comparatively robust economy.
