Conservatives already freaking out over '50 Shades of Grey' movie

Religious conservatives are already freaking out over the upcoming movie adaptation of the wildly popular “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) last week gave the film, which will be released Feb. 13, an R rating, warning audiences that it contained "unusual behavior" in addition to other content that typically restricts audience members to adults.

The conservative Morality in Media group took exception to the MPAA’s description of the film, which is based on the surprise best-selling novel by E.L. James.

The group objected that the MPAA's word "unusual" didn't account for what happens in the film -- a depiction of a woman submitting to a man's violent methods in a master-and-servant relationship. The MPAA's warning doesn't really prepare viewers for what they're about to see, the group complains.

The book depicts a contractual relationship between a young woman and a sadistic wealthy businessman, and Morality in Media described promotional materials for the film as misleading.

“The new extended trailer for the film calls it a ‘fairy tale’ which just further misleads the public into thinking this is simply a love story,” the group said. It complained that the "fairy tale" label masks the film's actual themes of humiliation, manipulation, and abuse.

The group suggested the MPAA amend its warning to suggest it promotes stalking and violence against women.

“Is this the description of a movie you’d promote to your son or daughter?” the group asked. “What about yourself?”
