Inquisitr.com duped by claim Costco dropped dinosaur cake because AZ Christian mom complained

UPDATE: After being contacted by a reader, Raw Story has attempted to verify this story independently and has not been able to reach anyone at the Mesa, AZ Costco warehouse who can speak to the veracity of this story. It should be noted that U.S. stores do not appear to offer online ordering for pre-designed birthday cakes and that the link in the original Inquisitr story clicks through to Costco, Australia.

A post on a Costco forum from 2012 said that cakes are only sold in-store and that online pre-ordering is not available.

Big box chain Costco has eliminated a dinosaur birthday cake from its bakery offerings after an Arizona mom with a vivid imagination complained that it promoted Satanism, reports The Frisky.

According to Jessica Eckerdt of Queen Creek she purchased the cake from Costco for her son’s birthday party, and after lighting the candles and preparing to sing "Happy Birthday To You" noticed that the legs and feet of the blue and green dinosaur looked like the number "666," the Sign of the Beast.

The cake, seen above, has only three of the stylized legs which could also be mistaken for three upside-down commas.

In an email to Costco she wrote: “I was extremely shocked and upset to see a demonic symbol written clear as day on my six-year-old son’s birthday cake. What was supposed to be a whimsical dinosaur became something very distasteful. I was extremely surprised at Costco for allowing such an inappropriate joke be sold to an unsuspecting victim.”

Although there was no further evidence that the popular discount retailer was attempting to indoctrinate children into the ways of Satan, the company has pulled the whimsical cake from it website and retail locations.
