Creepy ex-Texas police chief indicted for sexually assaulting 14-year-old girl

The former police chief of Maypearl, Texas was indicted on Wednesday and accused of sexual assault against a 14-year-old girl, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Prosecutors in Ellis County said that 50-year-old Kevin Coffey to be charged with indecency with a child by contact, indecency with a child by exposure, sexual performance by a child, and sexual assault of a child. He could spend up to 70 years in prison if convicted.

Coffey first came under scrutiny this past July, when a 16-year-old girl told investigators that he had been contacting her online since she was 14, and sent her messages through Facebook saying he "had a nice spot picked out" on a vehicle so he could handcuff her and "spank that a*s."

The accuser also said at the time that Coffey would contact her by flashing his patrol lights at her window, and that was also contacting five other teen girls. Authorities subsequently executed a search warrant on the then-chief's home, and he was fired from his position.

The Morning Newsalso reported that Coffey was accused in a separate lawsuit of harassing a local man, James Everett Meyer, after Meyer accused him of sexually assaulting teen girls in 2013.

According to that suit, Coffey had his officers conduct inappropriate traffic stops against Meyer and his family, while also threatening to frame Meyer for crimes. Meyer went on to commit suicide in June, the suit stated, after he "became obsessed with the fear that he would be falsely accused and imprisoned for criminal acts he never committed."
