Democrats want to see Trump's tax audit details to investigate whether the IRS is helping him out: report

President Donald Trump has consistently said that he is under audit and therefore can not release his taxes returns, however, Democrats are now seeking to audit Trump's claim as they drill down on getting his tax returns.

“The committee is considering legislative proposals and conducting oversight related to our federal tax laws, including, but not limited to, the extent to which the IRS audits and enforces the federal tax laws against the president,” Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-MASS) wrote in a letter.

Trump repeated his claims that he is under audit on Wednesday. However, according to CNN, being under an audit does not prevent someone from releasing their tax returns.

"We are under audit, despite what people said and we are working that out," Trump said.

“This is a matter of our oversight of the Internal Revenue Service — it’s broader than just the question of Donald Trump’s tax returns, though there’s plenty to ask about that,” Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) said according to Politico.

The report explained that Democrats have very little precedent for the request but look to Nixon's administration.

"Democrats say they don’t know how serious those examinations are, or if they really do happen, because the agency ultimately answers to the president," the report said.

"They point to an episode in the Nixon administration when the IRS initially blessed Nixon’s returns before a subsequent audit by Congress’s independent Joint Committee on Taxation found he actually owed almost $500,000 in unpaid taxes," the report said.

Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI) said they are seeking to change the law on how the IRS operates with the president.

"We are trying to determine whether there is a need for legislative change as it relates to the way the IRS audits and enforces the tax law on the president of the United States,” Kildee said.
