'Insane!' DHS flips out as Dems call for Abrego Garcia's release from ICE detention

The Department of Homeland Security traded barbs with Democratic lawmakers on Monday after immigration officials detained a high-profile individual.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a migrant from El Salvador, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials on Monday following an immigration check-in. His detention comes about 160 days since he was returned to the United States from El Salvador's notorious gang prison, CECOT.

The federal government has said they plan to deport Abrego Garcia to Uganda. A federal judge halted the deportation process Monday afternoon.

Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), and Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) responded to the news on social media.

"ICE is holding Kilmar Ábrego García and refusing to answer questions from his lawyers — while the Trump Admin continues to spread lies about his case," Van Hollen wrote on X. "Instead of spewing unproven allegations on social media, they need to put up or shut up in court."

"Let’s be clear: deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda makes no sense—it’s not his home country," Crockett posted on X. "Nothing about this process has been fair. ICE is targeting him with cruelty. This is the weaponization of government, not justice."

The comments didn't sit well with DHS, which responded in a post on X.

"Kilmar Abrego Garcia is not and will never be a Maryland Man—he is a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador and public safety threat," DHS posted on X.

"It is insane that sanctuary politicians chose to glorify and stand with an MS-13 gang member over the safety of American citizens," the post continued.
