President Donald Trump and his right-wing allies are stoking the long-simmering fear of racial revolt that has always lurked just below the surface of American white supremacy with their attacks on protesting NFL players.
The president has been attacking mostly black NFL players, sometimes by name, for nearly a week now over their protests during the National Anthem of police brutality and racial inequality, and he sounded a loud dog whistle Thursday morning.
“I have so many friends that are owners and they’re in a box,” Trump told "Fox & Friends." “I’ve spoken to a couple of them they said we are in a situation where we have to do something. I think they’re afraid of their players -- it’s disgraceful.”

A right-wing Christian broadcaster stoked those fears even more explicitly Wednesday by blaming former President Barack Obama for the protests -- which he fears will lead to racial revolts.
“Barack Obama has poisoned the American society,” said end-times broadcaster Rick Wiles. “We didn’t have this kind of racial hatred before Obama. I’ve never seen this kind of racial hatred in my life -- never. He poisoned our society and he did it deliberately to start a civil war. He’s just a paid thug. We need to know who he works for, but he’s a thug."
Wiles described the first black American president as a "foreigner" who is an "enemy of the nation," and the right-wing broadcaster used language that called to mind paranoia over race revolts that began with the arrival of the first African slaves.
"He’s paid to start a revolution, and I’m telling you folks, if you could get inside of Obama’s house, you would quickly discover that all day long he’s orchestrating the revolt across the nation," Wiles said. "He’s on the phone, he’s working it, he’s calling his people and he is telling them what to do. He is totally in charge of this rebellion. This is a rebellion -- and Obama is leading it.”
