'Sell the watch and pay a tailor': Menswear writer pens vicious takedown of RNC fashion

Donald Trump Jr. can't even dress like his dad correctly, Vivek Ramaswamy needs to step away from his Donald Duck motif and not even a $15,000 watch could save Rep. Michael Waltz from his own tailoring.

That's according to a new analysis of the Republican National Convention.

Menswear writer Derek Guy shredded several big-name Republicans Friday in his Politico analysis of the best and worst dressed men at the convention to nominate former President Donald Trump, whose eldest son bore the brunt of the criticism.

"Trump Jr. didn't even get the basics right," Guy wrote. "Donald Trump Jr. dressed a bit like his father with his dark navy suit, white semi-spread collar shirt and shiny, bright red tie. But he got a critical element wrong."

According to Guy, Trump Jr.'s decision to pair oxblood-colored shoes with an alligator belt "the color of shrimp tempura" just simply isn't done.

"The color of your belt should always match your shoes," Guy explains. "Otherwise, your belt becomes a distracting line that drags the viewer’s eye downward and cuts your body in half."

Take note, Junior.

Waltz (R-FL) got a stern reprimand from Guy for pairing a Rolex Batman with a business suit in what Guy dubbed "questionable taste."

"When your suit jacket’s collar keeps hovering off your neck, one wonders if you shouldn’t reallocate some of that money toward a tailor," quipped Guy.

Ramaswamy earned kudos from Guy for rising above past Disney cartoon waterfowl-informed fashion choices.

"In the last year or so, Vivek Ramaswamy has vaguely looked like Donald Duck, stomping along the campaign trail while wearing navy suits with brightly colored, orange-tan shoes," Guy said. "Thankfully, Ramaswamy got it right this week when he went with more conservative and tasteful black footwear. He should stick to this formula moving forward."

The menswear writer took a subtle jab at Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) for his total MAGA makeover: "If JD Vance has a stylist," wrote Guy, "they should get a raise."

Nor could Guy resist the temptation to take a swipe at Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

Unlike former Kevin McCarthy, who said the smooth-faced firebrand looked like an "AI-powered inflatable sex doll", he kept his criticism to the clothes.

Like McCarthy, Guy relied on surprising imagery to do it: West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice's bulldog Babydog.

"Babydog stole the show...no one could compete," wrote Guy. "Gaetz, for example, looked like he was attending a burial in his shrunken black suit and black tie."
