'Saved by God' Trump mocked for not placing hand on Bible during oath

When President Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday, he didn't appear to place his hand on the Bible, as is expected during a "swearing-in" ceremony.

Former RNC Chair Michael Steele posted a photo of Trump taking the oath of office at the Capitol on Monday. As First Lady Melania Trump held not one, but two Bibles, Trump's left hand can clearly be seen dangling by his side, instead of resting atop the word of God.

"Trump did not place his hand on the Bible," Steele wrote.

Former Republican strategist Tim Miller noted "No hand on the Bible. Perfect," while a person describing themselves as a "MAGA" patriot asked, "Why isn't Trump's hand on the Bible?"

Another poster wrote, "The first President of the United States in over 100 years to not put his hand on the Bible while taking the oath of office. I think you've been duped, evangelicals!"

Writer Adam Schwarz observed, "'We will not forget our god', says Trump moments after he became the first President in a century to forget to put his hand over the bible while being sworn-in."

According to ABC News, "There is no legal requirement for the president to place his hand on the Bible. According to Article VI, Clause 3, of the U.S. Constitution, which covers oaths of office, members of Congress, state legislatures, and executive and judicial officers throughout the country are bound 'by oath or affirmation' to support the Constitution."

During Trump's inaugural speech, he declared that God himself anointed him to become the 47th president.

"They tried to take my freedom and, indeed, to take my life," Trump said of the assassination attempts against him. "I felt my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again."
