President Donald Trump is on an extended losing streak that rivals the New York Mets' 11-game skid, according to a new analysis.
CNN's Harry Enten examined recent polling that shows Americans have soured on the 79-year-old president's economic record, and he expressed surprise by how long his numbers have remained below water.
"Americans sayinflation is the number oneissue facing them right now, andto quote the great 'Happy Gilmore,' according to them, theprice is wrong when it comes tothe president of the United States," Enten said. "Just take a look atthese net approval ratings whenit comes to inflation, thepresident of United States ishitting all-time record lows in all of these polls."
"NBC came out yesterday, 36points underwater," he added. "CBS came outa few weeks ago, 38 pointsunderwater. Ipsos-Reuters, 43points underwater. CNN came outearlier this month, 45 pointsunderwater, and taking the cakeis UMass Amherst, 47 pointsunderwater. Across all of thesepolls, Trump is in his worstposition ever on the issue thatthe American people say over andover and over again is their keynumber one issue."
That's a sharp turnaround from where Trump was in public opinion polling when he returned to office in January 2025.
"No, it wasn't this alwaysthus," Enten said, "and this iswhat is so amazing to me. Imean, these shifts that we'rejust seeing. My goodnessgracious, voters on Trump andinflation in the 2024 election.Remember, Trump got re-elected toa second term and Joe Biden gotpushed to the curb in largepart because Americans felt hecouldn't handle inflation. Trumpwas more trusted than Kamala Harris on inflation by sevenpoints. Look at his net approvalright now, you average all those polls on the right side of yourscreen, 42 points underwater. That is a nearly 50-point shiftaway from the president of the United States"
"Youthink this is bad?" he added. "Nearly 50points shift, how about a 70-point? I'm laughing because younever see numbers like this.Look at this: Independents on Trump, inflation in the 2024election versus Harris. Trumpwas favored by 10 points. Down he goes, down he goes. He's downto 60 points underwater oninflation. That is a 70-pointshift, and a little bit less thantwo years worth of time. John Berman and I are big baseballfans, and I will tell you, I'mgoing to go to Trump's homeborough in Queens, because to behonest, it's the only comparisonI can think of. Donald Trump isin worse shape on inflationright now than the New York Metropolitans are in the NL East. That is how bad – and what, the Mets just lose their 11thstraight game."
Trump's economic record is risking his Republican congressional majorities, as well.
"This is what ishappening here," Enten said. "The strengthsthat Donald Trump once had withthe electorate, the things thatgot him elected to a secondterm, you can wave adios amigos, goodbye to them, and why that'sso important is even though Trump isn't on the ballot come November, a lot of Republicansin Congress are on the ballot, and if these numbers hold, you canwave adios, amigos – goodbye, see you later – certainly that House majority and maybe that Senate majority as well."
