Civil rights groups called for additional safeguards for prospective jurors in the Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump.
Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis, who has been targeted by racist threats herself, has sought increased protections after the former president's supportersposted personal details online about the grand jury members who voted to indict Trump and 18 of his allies, and dozens of advocacy groups asked for increased security to protect against harassment, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“Jurors — past, present and future — are under attack from Donald Trump and those who do his bidding,” the groups wrote in the open letter. "The attacks are sure to accelerate with the approach of his criminal conspiracy trials in Washington and Atlanta for his attempt to undermine our constitutional republic and to overturn the results of the 2020 election."
"Self-serving assaults on institutions and individuals are what Trump and his enablers do," the letter added. "These attacks threaten centuries-old American institutions designed by the Framers to hold to account any leader who would be king."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
Willis has taken steps herself to protect her daughters, father and ex-husband, and Superior Court judge Scott McAfee recently banned reporters and others from identifying jury members in trials involving Trump and his co-defendants or revealing personal details about them.
“Trump, by undermining institutions that check both government power and lawless individuals, aims to release himself from all constraints,” the groups wrote. “For this reason, his vicious attacks on juries are sure to escalate.”
The coalition was assembled by the group Not Above the Law, and the letter was signed by Public Citizen, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Sierra Club, Stand Up America and dozens of other groups.
