President Donald Trump took major flak as he tried to claim credit for lower prices at a regional grocery store chain.
The Pittsburgh-based grocer Giant Eagle, which operates about 200 supermarkets between Maryland and Indiana, dropped its prices on July 9 on beef, American cheese and more than 300 other products through Labor Day. The 80-year-old president patted himself on the back on his Truth Social website.
"Wonderful news! I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families," Trump posted.
"Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families," he added. "We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, just like Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST after the disaster we inherited from Sleepy Joe Biden."
He also credited himself for an announcement that Walmart and Sam’s Club would cut prices on thousands of grocery items, such as ground beef, fresh produce, snacks and soft drinks.
"Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart," Trump posted. "Together, we will make America stronger and more affordable than ever before, and get rid of the stench and Inflation perpetrated on us by the Dumocrats and the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration!"
But other social media users looked askance at Trump's claims — and noted that Kroger's $1.65 billion acquisition of Giant Eagle this month was still awaiting approval by the Federal Trade Commission.
"Did he get one of these in the mail?" wondered X user Valerie Vaughn, sharing an image showing a Giant Eagle coupon insert.
"Giant Eagle is in process of selling itself to Kroger's for over a billion dollars," noted author Joe Corey. "They are waiting on federal approval for the deal... Is this rails being greased?"
"Gee I wonder who just bought stock in Giant Eagle LLC??" surmised radio host Ron Evans.
"Think someone told him Giant Eagle is running ads promoting these price cuts," considered Pittsburgh resident Kathy Byrne. "He spoke in PA this week so it’s possible the ad was seen by his set-up crew."
"Is the White House going to start posting supermarket flyers on their website now?" suggested popular Bluesky user Not On The LIST.
"Wow, 300 products! That's amazing!" exclaimed widely followed Bluesky user That Other Dude. "Unless you consider the fact that large chain stores typically carry 50-f---ing-thousand products."
