MS NOW's Mika Brzezinski analyzed a contentious interview by NBC's Kristen Welker that ended when President Donald Trump stormed out after a flurry of lies about his 2020 election loss.
The pre-recorded interview aired Sunday on "Meet the Press" and showed the 79-year-old president lashing out at Welker when she pushed him to provide evidence of election fraud, calling her "crooked" and "stupid," and he eventually stood up, yanked out his earpiece and patted her on the shoulder as he walked off.
"One can becomeoverwhelmed," Brzezinski said, "so let's just goback to the beginning where hesaid those folks were usheredin by the FBI, and let's stopright there. Let's stop rightthere. Let's bring it up, because then he continued tolie more and lie more and liemore, and then you getoverwhelmed or frustrated, andthen he's lied for two or threeminutes. Stop right there, lyingto the American people. Thosefolks had zip ties, they had anoose, they had weapons. Insome cases, they defecated atthe Capitol, in the halls. They're criminals who wereconvicted of their crimes."
"Iknow the president pardonedthem because, for some reason,in his twisted thinking thatthese people deserve somethingmore than what they got, manyof them have gone out to commitmore crimes since they've beenpardoned," she added. "Republicans and Democrats alike were running for their lives."
The "Morning Joe" co-host acknowledged that Welker faced a steep challenge the exchange, but Brzezinski said she would have ended the interview when Trump started lying, just as host Joe Scarborough had in an interview during the 2024 campaign.
"Everybody has differentinterviewing styles, and thatwas absolutely a great, great, great effort," she said. "But I would stopat the first lie. I wouldn'tallow any lies on my program.Joe certainly hung up on thepresident when he was runningfor office and started lying, just hung up on him because youcan't have lies, and then thisis, some would argue, astrategy, you know, beat up themedia and so the base can getall excited to see him calling Kristen Welker stupid."
"Youdon't allow it," Brzezinski continued. "We can't have acomplicit media. We can't beinvolved at all with spreadinglies. We can't watch him telllies and not call them outright away and stay with thatfirst one, because they're alllies. Everything that was said in there, we could go througheach one and show how it's alie. But what he likes is thatmoment where everyone getsflustered and watches thisdrama play out while thepresident takes something thatwas twisted, sick andcriminal that happened at ournation's Capitol."
"Show thevideo, you can show the videoof the cop getting squeezed inthe door, being injured," she added. "Youcan hear that. Is that the FBIushering them in or is that acop getting very injured and islife threatened, and I believeat the same time that this washappening, American flags and Trump flags were used to gorepeople and bash people and bashthrough windows and commitvandalism and try and interferewith the nation's electoralprocess."
