Trump suffering 'a brutal streak of new legal exposure' as he continues to lose in court

Donald Trump has been on a yearlong legal losing streak after his re-election defeat, and this week has dealt him another bad hand.

The former president faced a string of losses as he sought to overturn that 2020 election loss to Joe Biden, and was impeached a second time for fomenting the Jan. 6 insurrection -- and the congressional investigation of that violent attack on democracy has exposed him to another round of losses, according to a new recap by Axios.

The publication reported that the former president "is enduring a brutal streak of new legal exposure and losses in court."

On Tuesday night, a judge ordered White House records that could implicate Trump in the January 6 attack on the Capitol to be released to a congressional committee, despite the ex-president's attempts to keep them secret.

The documents have been sought by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 violence, in which hundreds of Trump supporters forced the shutdown of Congress and delayed a joint session to confirm that Joe Biden had won the November 2020 election and would become president.

Trump sued seeking a stay to halt the release of the documents, arguing that as former president he retained executive privilege to keep the communications and visitor logs related to that day under seal.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan said Trump's request was denied, stating it was in the public's interest to release the documents and that he was "unlikely to succeed on the merits of his claims or suffer irreparable harm."

That came on the heels of a new report by the Office of Special Counsel that found at least 13 senior administration officials had violated ethics law to set up "a taxpayer-funded campaign apparatus within the upper echelons of the executive branch," although no punishments are expected to be meted out, but there's still more bad news from this week.

"The [House select] committee has subpoenaed 16 former Trump aides over the past two days," Axios reported, "including former senior adviser Stephen Miller, press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and campaign adviser Jason Miller."

In New York, a second grand jury has been empaneled in the state's criminal investigation of the Trump Organization, while in Georgia a district attorney is moving closer to convening her own grand jury to investigate the ex-president's efforts to overturn his election loss there.
