New York City comptroller Brad Lander on Wednesday accused X owner Elon Musk of stealing $80 million from his city.
In speaking out about the alleged theft, Lander accused Musk of "highway robbery" by removing $80 million that had been allocated by the federal government to help New York house refugees.
"Elon Musk, with no legal authority [seized] it back," he said.
Lander said that his team discovered the $80 million missing from New York's bank account on Wednesday morning, and he described the alleged theft as "a betrayal of everyone who calls New York City home."
Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency have been on a rampage by illegally shutting down entire government agencies and blocking funding for key programs and services.
