A New Jersey Democrat stirred up social media on Tuesday afternoon during a fiery speech outside the Treasury Department, in which she said her party would "fight back" and demanded to "shut down the Senate," declaring, "We are at war!"
Rep. LaMonica McIver, who represents the district encompassing Newark, Orange and Jersey City, delivered an impassioned message Tuesday to her colleagues on the opposite side of the aisle.
"Let them know, especially the Republicans, that we will not take this. We will fight back," she told a raucous crowd of supporters.
McIver then demanded, "God d--- it shut down the Senate. We are at war! Any time a person can pay $250 million into a campaign and they've been given access to the Department of Treasury in the United States of America, we are at war!"
McIver's remarks come amid reports tech billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency gained access to the Treasury's federal payment system. The system handles trillions of dollars in government expenditures and contains sensitive information about millions of Americans.
Her incendiary remarks led to swift reactions from both the left and the right.
"Oh no. Aren't we supposed to decry the violent rhetoric?" quipped former Republican Minnesota state Sen. Sean Nienow on X.
"Sup NJ10 let’s gooo," cheered Roselle Park, New Jersey, Mayor Joe Signorello.
Jamie Carter, a delegate at the Democratic National Convention last year, cheered, "DEMS ARE ON FIRE! And I am here for it!"
But her remarks irked the right, including firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
"This sounds like a call for insurrection to me. CC: @TheJusticeDept@FBI," wrote Greene, tagging two federal law enforcement agencies on X.
"Democrat lunatics want us all dead, and have declared war on all of us. Protect your family accordingly," wanted the American Firearms Association on Facebook.
