Judge smacks down Trump's claim he dismissed '80%' of New York fraud case

New York State Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron cleared up confusion on Tuesday after former President Donald Trump claimed that 80% of a fraud case against him had been taken off the table.

Following a court hearing on Monday, Trump told reporters that Engoron had reversed himself by rejecting financial transactions that took place earlier than 2014. He said Engoron had decided they were outside the statute of limitations.

"We very much appreciate the judge's decision today — or his statement today — on the statute of limitations, which is a very big thing," Trump explained on Monday.

The Messenger's Adam Klasfeld was in the courtroom on Tuesday when Engoron clarified his statements.

"Every use of a [false] statement of financial condition in business starts the statute of limitations running again," the judge explained.

Engoron has previously called defense arguments on the statute of limitations "a bizarre, invented, inverted form of the 'relation back' doctrine."
