Ex-Trump employee: President has a long history of nepotism -- and it's a recipe for 'disaster'
President Donald Trump's decision to employ both his daughter and his son-in-law in the White House has drawn frequent accusations of nepotism, even from some Republicans.
Jack O'Donnell, the former president and chief operating officer at Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, writes over at Vox that Trump's habit of hiring unqualified family members to handle key responsibilities has been a hallmark of his career -- and that it doesn't bode well for the success of his presidency.
"He placed [ex-wife] Ivana at Trump Castle despite her having little to no business experience," he writes. "I believe that Ivana failed miserably due to gross overspending, lack of market knowledge, and poor management skills. While there were differing reports for why Trump fired her ranging from flattening growth to personal issues, I believe he was forced to remove her due to her incompetence."
Similarly, O'Donnell says that Trump tapped his late brother, Robert, to finish the construction of the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, with disastrous results.
"With virtually no experience managing or building a casino, let alone the largest casino development in the world, Robert Trump was, I believe, thrust into a role he was doomed to fail in simply because he was family," he explains. "The Taj Mahal debacle ultimately cost Donald Trump everything in Atlantic City."
Despite these disasters, however, Trump has continued his pattern of hiring unqualified relatives to key positions, as evidenced by his decision to give son-in-law Jared Kushner the tasks of bringing peace to the Middle East, ending the opioid crisis, and reorganizing the entire executive branch of the United States government.
"Unfortunately for all of Trump’s children and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, they were given responsibility way beyond their means," he writes. "All four suddenly had to become political strategists and experts on governing America."
