Classified documents released by President Donald Trump last month revealed why the FBI's counterintelligence investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 elections never reached completion.
According to The New York Times analysis, just a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, bureau officials launched a secret investigation codenamed "Oxferd Comma."
The investigation had two tracks: a criminal probe into obstruction of justice and a counterintelligence investigation into Trump's potential Russian compromise.
When then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel, he narrowly authorized Mueller to investigate only criminal conduct, effectively sidelining the counterintelligence prong.
The Times observed Mueller focused solely on crimes and argued this led national security to question whether Trump was able to "fade away, never fully investigated or resolved" in the final 2019 report.
Mueller's investigation documented extensive Russian influence operations attempting to connect with Trump.
