FBI investigation into Russia election tampering moves forward after Mueller investigation released: report

Special counsel Robert Mueller's criminal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election has concluded. The probe proved massively consequential, winning indictments, guilty pleas, and convictions against nearly 40 individuals and corporations, and finding strong evidence that President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct the probe.

But that was only one side of the investigation. According to NBC News, the counterintelligence side of the Russia investigation is still ongoing, with the FBI and other intelligence agencies working to prevent Russia from trying the same tactics to subvert the 2020 election.

This reportedly includes determining how many Americans unwittingly were used by Russia in their scheme, and whether any Americans are still compromised by the Kremlin.

It is not known whether Trump is a subject in this investigation.

Russia employed a broad range of tactics to interfere with the election, including stealing Democratic emails and distributing them to WikiLeaks to bury negative coverage of Trump. There is also evidence that the Kremlin penetrated state voter registration systems, although there are no known cases of them changing votes directly.
