Fired UC Davis cop who pepper-sprayed protesters gets $38K in workers' comp claims

An appeals board has awarded a former campus police officer $38,055 in workers’ compensation after he was fired for the pepper-spraying of student protesters.

Former police Lt. John Pike was awarded the settlement Oct. 16 from the University of California Davis by the state Division of Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.

The 40-year-old Pike was fired by the university after dousing protesters for about 15 seconds Nov. 18, 2011, during an Occupy Wall Street demonstration against tuition increases.

The incident was captured in a widely circulated video.

Davis claims he suffered depression and anxiety after he and his family received death threats related to the incident.

The workers’ compensation claim “resolves all claims of psychiatric injury” related to Pike’s employment with the university.
