Former federal prosecutor: If Trump isn't already the subject of a criminal investigation, he 'imminently will be'

It’s only a matter of time before Donald Trump becomes a target of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, according to New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza.

Lizza spoke with Julie O’Sullivan—who served as a prosecutor on the team that investigated Bill and Hillary Clinton in the Whitewater scandal—said fired FBI Directory James Comeys’ testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week “would be enough to get an indictment” by a grand jury.

According to Sullivan, Trump’s attempt to quash the FBI investigation into former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn shows the president is orchestrating a cover-up.

“For a prosecutor, this attempt to hide the conversation, all antenna are going up,” O’Sullivan told Lizza. “That tells you that he has a consciousness that what he’s about to do is wrong. It’s like having a bonfire with documents in the back yard. It’s wonderful. Seriously, this is the best thing ever for a prosecutor.”

A former federal prosecutor from Barack Obama’s administration likewise said it’s likely Mueller will look into Trump’s attempt to stop the FBI investigation, pointing to the president’s own admission that it guided his decision to fire Comey.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Mueller will investigate that,” the former federal prosecutor said. “Trump claims total vindication, and the thing that he was claiming vindication about was that he was not the target of a criminal investigation. But now he is—or imminently will be.”
