Two people have died in a shooting on Thursday at Florida State University, and officials identified the gunman as the son of a sheriff's deputy.
The shooting took place around noon Eastern Time at the FSU Student Union, a central and busy part of campus, especially during lunch hours. Two people who are not students were killed. Five were hospitalized.
Officials identified the gunman as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, the son of a sheriff's deputy who is an 18-year veteran and a school resource officer.

"Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons, and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene," officials said at the news conference.
The deputy wasn't immediately placed on administrative leave.
The suspect was also a longstanding member of the sheriff's office's Youth Advisory Council who had received numerous training programs.
"It's not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons," the sheriff said.
The suspect was shot by law enforcement, taken into custody, and hospitalized.
All classes and university events, including athletic activities, were canceled for the day.
"This is a tragic day," said Richard D. McCullough, president of the university, who added that their "hearts are broken."
