Republican lawmakers were outraged that they had to see Charlie Kirk's brutal shooting on social media, and appealed to Elon Musk to remove the video.
Kirk was shot in the neck during a political event, and the graphic video spread across all social media platforms. This impacted GOP lawmaker Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who called out to Musk, as well as Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and the owners of TikTok, to change things.
"I am calling on @elonmusk, @finkd, and @tiktok_us to remove the horrifying videos of Charlie Kirk’s murder. He has a family, young children, and no one should be forced to relive this tragedy online," the lawmaker wrote. "These are not the only graphic videos of horrifying murders circulating— at some point, social media begins to desensitize humanity. We must still value life. Please take them down."
Another GOP lawmaker, Lauren Boebert, agreed."
"Thank you!!! I agree completely! I NEVER want to see that again!! I hate that I saw it at all," she wrote to Luna.
But progressive influencer Alex Cole noted, "Republicans were just complaining about the video of the Ukrainian girl not getting enough attention, now they want to block this one?"
And even some MAGA voices disagreed with Luna and Boebert.
Republican political candidate Lily Tang Williams said, "I respectively disagree. Freedom of speech includes the content we don't like or hate or bloody."
"We must defend it no matter how bad it is. I have faced evil before growing up in Mao's China. We need to show evil exists in America, so we know what we are fighting against," she then added.
