GOP senator fears his party has become a 'cult-like' organization dedicated to Trump

Outgoing Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) told reporters on Wednesday that he's afraid that the Republican Party is simply becoming a personality cult for President Donald Trump.

"We are in a strange place," Corker said, according to MSNBC's Garrett Haake. "It's almost, it's becoming a cultish thing, isn't it? It's not a good place for any party to end up with a cult-like situation as it relates to a president that happens to be of, purportedly, of the same party."

Corker was particularly annoyed at Republican leadership for squashing his proposal to reel in Trump's powers to slap tariffs on key U.S. allies on national security grounds.

"We have an administration that wakes up everyday, on an hoc basis, just making stuff up with no coherency to it," he told reporters.

Corker on Tuesday railed against Republicans for being too afraid to contradict the president -- even as they complained about his actions privately.

"I heard the senator from Texas, the senior senator from Texas, saying the other day, ‘Well, gosh, we might upset the president,'” Corker said on the Senate floor, referencing Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). "We might upset the president of the United States before the midterms. So, gosh, we can’t vote on the Corker Amendment because we’re taking, rightly so, the responsibilities that we have to deal with tariffs and revenues."
