GOP strategist rips Trump for humiliating America with his ‘buffoonery’ and setting Republicans up for ‘disaster’

Former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt told MSNBC on Tuesday that Trump's 'buffoonery' at his unhinged public meeting with Democratic leaders had 'humiliated' America, and predicted that the Republicans would be blamed for any government shutdown.

"All Americans were likely humiliated by the buffoonery of it all," Schmidt said, slamming the president and mocking Pence for sleeping through it all before launching a broadside at the Republican Party.

"The whole country heard Donald Trump for two years say that Mexico is going to pay for the wall," he reminded host Stephanie Ruhle. "So how is it that the government is going to be shut down because the United States now isn't going to pay for the great Trump Wall?"

"At the end of the day, the one thing Republicans have successfully communicated over the last 30 years is their hostility to government," he said. "So, it's the Republicans who always get the blame when government gets shut down. And this will be a disaster for Republicans, like it was the time before and the time before that, and the time before that, and the time before that. Government shutdowns always hurt the Republican Party."
