GOP's Kevin McCarthy gets nailed by his own words after claiming Trump is blameless for Capitol insurrection

It has been a week and Republicans are already backtracking on accountability around the armed insurrection against the U.S. Capitol.

"The President (Donald Trump) bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) proclaimed last week.

This week, things have changed, and McCarthy doesn't think that former President Donald Trump had anything to do with inciting violence at the Capitol.

"I don't believe he provoked if you listened to what he said at the rally," he told reporters at his weekly press conference.

The Recount did a side-by-side mash-up of McCarthy's statement and Trump telling the crowd that it's time that they march to the Capitol to show their strength.

It's unclear if Trump's attacks on McCarthy were what caused him to cave in to the extremists, but so far his colleague Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) hasn't changed her tune.
