Former Republican insider Rick Wilson has predicted that President Donald Trump wasn't kidding with his election threat this week.
The Lincoln Project co-founder cautioned in his Substack Friday how Trump will often joke or tease about something, throws it out to his MAGA followers and then that manifests into a story from a conservative media outlet about the "controversy of the statement." Then, ultimately, the president's words reveal what's really happening behind the scenes inside the Trump administration, Wilson argued.
In an exclusive interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Trump floated the idea: “When you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election."
The shocking statement wasn't something to ignore — it was a warning, Wilson explained.
"Yes, he said those words," Wilson wrote.
"After a decade, some of his offenses against the nation, the law, the Constitution, common sense, and human decency still have the power to shock, and this one is a threat, not a joke," Wilson added.
Wilson cast doubt that Republicans would fight back against Trump's claims that elections shouldn't be conducted.
"He raises a fast million from it via email fundraising, feeding the incentive machine for others to follow," Wilson wrote. "Some Republicans object, then vote for it anyway. (Looking at you, Susan Collins.)"
"And once the policy, no matter how odious, is implemented, we find it was the White House’s plan all along," he wrote.
