‘He won’t be able to avoid hugging’: Chris Christie promises Trump will eventually touch Texans

President Donald Trump was criticized for his lack of empathy and compassion often seen by past presidents visiting the survivors of terrible tragedies.

Trump landed in Corpus Christi, Texas and met with authorities and received a briefing by FEMA in person, rather than via conference call. But he never met with actual survivors, because the rescues were still underway. Traditionally, presidents ask local officials when a good time would be to come to town to meet with survivors after a disaster, so it doesn't pull away too many resources. Trump decided he was coming Tuesday come hell or high water. However, the disaster continued and it became the latter.

Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) swears that he will become more empathetic when he sees people.

"I think when he goes back there this weekend -- because, remember, he wasn't in Houston," Christie began, explaining that Trump didn't see any of the people.

"He didn't [hug anyone] yesterday because he didn't see the people," he continued. "I will tell you, when he sees those people, and I know him, he won't be able to avoid, and won't want to avoid, hugging and making those people feel better."

Christie swore Tuesday was a "competence day" supervising the efforts on the ground.

"I predict when he goes back on Saturday, and he starts to see victims and he starts to see damage, there is no way as a human being you can see that and not be affected, and I think you'll see that personal side of the president come out then," Christie continued.
