Hillary Clinton named 'apparent winner' over Bernie Sanders in Iowa caucus squeaker: NBC

Hillary Clinton overcame a strong challenge from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to do something she could not eight years ago: win the Iowa Democratic caucus, according to NBC News.

Several new outlets reported that Clinton earned 700 delegate votes vs. Bernie Sanders' 695 votes -- making the Democratic Party's 2016 Iowa caucus the closest contest in its history.

Clinton picked up just 29.5 percent of the vote in the 2008 Iowa caucus, losing to both Barack Obama and John Edwards.

Polls released over the weekend showed Clinton with a slim edge over Sanders in what looked to be a tight race.

Sanders could slow Clinton's momentum in New Hampshire, which votes next and borders his home state of Vermont, before heading into primaries in Southern states -- where large populations of black voters favor the former First Lady, U.S. senator and Secretary of State.
