House Democrats plan to deploy as many as 5 committees investigating Trump appointee Betsy DeVos: report

President Donald Trump isn't the only member of his administration who is looking at multiple investigations by House committees about to be taken over by Democratic majorities following the "blue wave" midterm elections.

According to Politico, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing at least five committees -- with subpoena power -- planning on looking into her policies and tenure once they take control of the House in the new year.

With Seth Frotman, the former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s top student loan official trashing tyhe Trump appointee, saying, "Betsy DeVos has brought a special mix of incompetence and malevolence to Washington," Democratic lawmakers are just waiting on their chance to press her department about changes in policy under the woman who had no background in education before Trump selected her.

According to Politico, "Even in a Republican-controlled Congress, DeVos had a strained relationship at times with some committees. Her main priorities, such as expanding school choice, were largely ignored as lawmakers hashed out government funding bills. Now she will have to answer to House Democrats wielding gavels, several of whom have long worked on education issues and have been among her most vocal critics."

Rep. Mark Takano (D-CA), expected to lead the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said he has questions about DeVos taking the side of for-profit colleges that enroll tens of thousands of veterans every year.

“I want to examine the extent to which her rollbacks of regulations negatively impact veterans,” Takano told Politico.

DeVos is also likely to be a target of the House Education Committee, the House Oversight Committee and the House Appropriations subcommittee overseeing education funding, which is slated to be chaired by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).

According to DeLauro, her committee will focus on ways to “hold Secretary DeVos accountable for her agency’s failure to uphold federal protections for our students.”

“I will make sure Secretary DeVos knows Americans want her to protect students and veterans, not the for-profit school industry,” she explained.

The list of DeVos's antagonists doesn't end there, with blunt-talking Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) waiting to take over the powerful Financial Services Committee.

Discussing DeVos, the firebrand Waters attacked the Trump-appointee for her “full-on attack on civil rights protections for students—particularly students of color, students with disabilities, transgender students, and survivors of sexual assault.”

“I’ll be involved in student loan issues, absolutely,” Waters added.
