President Donald Trump faced a round of ridicule Monday after abruptly changing his tune during a tense exchange with a reporter after failing to realize she worked for a MAGA-friendly news outlet.
The awkward moment unfolded when Trump challenged a reporter questioning him about the Iran war and unrest in France, only to discover she is with The Daily Wire, the right-leaning media company co-founded by conservative commentator Ben Shapiro.
“Emmanuel Macron is blaming the Iran war and you essentially for the rioting in France,” the reporter said before Trump cut in.
“I don’t think he is,” Trump told the reporter. “No, I think that’s fake news. Who are you with?”
“No, sir. Mary Margaret with The Daily Wire,” the reporter replied.
“Oh, Daily Wire’s good,” Trump said. “Sorry, Daily Wire’s good.”
The sudden reversal quickly drew mockery online.
“He accidentally gave away the game,” wrote Jeopardy! champion Hemant Mehta. “He can’t handle tough questions from anyone.”
“Trump called the question ‘fake news’ before even hearing which outlet the reporter represented,” a post from independent journalist @kirikaar said. “At this point, it looks like if he doesn’t like the question, he just calls it fake news instead of answering.”
Radio host Mark Bland pointed to the speed of the reversal.
“See in 10 seconds it went from FAKE NEWS to ‘You're GOOD NEWS!’ Bland wrote on X. “So all those times you read info from the WH, you were lied to.”
“He’s against journalists who report the truth — Corruption and Epstein files,” posted journalist Nancy Levine Stearns.
Other reactions were shorter.
“Clown show,” wrote the commentator account POC Culture.
“I’m screaming,” another user declared.
The White House even got in on it, posting a clip of the short exchange with a rolling on the floor laughing emoji.
