REVEALED: Whistleblower fears Jan. 6 committee is letting the Capitol police off the hook

A whistleblower wants Congress to take a closer look at how U.S. Capitol police responded to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The whistleblower told Politico that he gave the House select committee a 90-minute interview last week, and more Capitol police personnel are scheduled to speak with them next week, and he's concerned that congressional investigators are too close to the Capitol police department to conduct an open and honest investigation.

"They're not going to do a real review of the Capitol police," the whistleblower told Politico. "I think it's a chilling effect that they're in bed with the general counsel."

A committee staffer asked the whistleblower if a lawyer from the police department could attend the interview, which concerned the witness because he didn't know how the department knew he was speaking to investigators, but he told the staffer that he wouldn't take part if department lawyers were there and ultimately none attended.

"It's obvious that they [USCP] want to intimidate people and no one's going to say anything bad about the department or anything that went on with the lawyers sitting in the room," the whistleblower said. "It seems like the committee is carrying water for Capitol police management."

The whistleblower was at the department's command center during the attack, and Politico independently confirmed that he has since left the department.

A committee spokesperson declined to comment on the interview, and a spokesperson for Capitol police defended the department's response.
