MSNBC's Joe Scarborough compared President Donald Trump's threat to abandon Puerto Rico with the lofty rhetoric of his predecessors.
The "Morning Joe" host reacted to Trump's tweets on Thursday complaining the U.S. territory faced a financial crisis "of their own making," citing a report from the conservative Sinclair Media, and threatened to withdraw federal aid.
That contradicted a speech given last week by Vice President Mike Pence last week in Puerto Rico, and Scarborough mocked the president's callous impatience.
"I never heard (that) before, maybe (John F.) Kennedy said, 'We will be with you today, we will be with you tomorrow, we will be with you until the end of next week,'" Scarborough said, trying on an impression of the late president. "I mean, that's what's happened -- no, it's what's happened. 'We will build friendships here that will last until lunchtime, (then) we can go to a football game.'"
Co-host Mika Brzezinski welcomed to the show Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson, who wrote Friday that the president's threat was "an impeachable offense."
"I think the president's tweets about Puerto Rico were incredibly offensive, given what the island is enduring right now," Brzezinski said. "Which, again, brings us back to where we started the show. I don't think can you help this president unless you stop his tweeting."
